DentalGoodNews | On July 24, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois ruled to dismiss a proposed class action filed by patient Megan Lisota against Dental Service Organization (DSO) Heartland Dental and telecommunications service provider RingCentral. According to the court's ruling document, the plaintiff alleged that RingCentral's AI system processed call content without her knowledge or consent, violating the Federal Wiretap Act (18 U.S.C. § 2510 et seq.). However, the judge determined that RingCentral's AI analysis function is part of its core service offering and falls under the "ordinary course of business" exception as stipulated in Section 2510(5)(a)(ii) of the Act, thus not constituting an "interception" under the law. The case was dismissed with prejudice, barring the plaintiff from refiling the same claims.
Documents show that Heartland Dental provides non-clinical administrative support services to partner clinics and contracted with RingCentral to deploy an AI-powered call system. RingCentral positions itself as an "AI-driven business communication platform," offering real-time voice transcription, automatic call summary generation, keyword extraction, and sentiment and tone analysis. Heartland Dental utilized these features to identify incoming patients and flag missed appointment opportunities. The plaintiff filed the lawsuit in July 2025, alleging that when she called the clinic, her call content was processed by the AI system without her knowledge or consent, seeking to cover all U.S. residents whose calls were processed by RingCentral.
In January 2026, the court initially dismissed the case without prejudice, citing the plaintiff's failure to sufficiently state a claim, and granted leave to amend the complaint. After the plaintiff filed an amended complaint, the judge stated in the final ruling that RingCentral does not merely provide call forwarding services; its AI analysis function is an integral part of the platform's core services rather than a data mining activity separate from the calls. Therefore, the "ordinary course of business" exception applies.
