Who is paying for “unattended patient data” and “unused tools”?

At the Dental Service Organization (DSO) exhibition, shiny AI tools always catch the eye. Gary Salman and Matthew McGaw stood in front of the booth, sharing their observations of "Shadow AI" and "AI Graveyards" across tens of thousands of devices. Just a few weeks later, whether these tools have truly made their way into daily workflows has become their focus of attention.

The two industry veterans pointed out that impulse purchases often lack a clear governance framework and training, leading to subscription fees continuing to drain away without visible value in return. Meanwhile, AI usage that is not compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) also plants the seeds of patient Data Breach risks, with regulatory exposure that could surface at any moment.

They further cautioned that only by first understanding actual usage, developing detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and conducting small-scale pilots can AI truly deliver value while ensuring safety and compliance...
