Four-year litigation ends: Align Technology antitrust case reaches $31.75 million settlement.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California recently approved a $31.75 million antitrust settlement between Align Technology, the parent company of Invisalign, and consumers of SmileDirectClub, dismissing all lawsuits against the company.

The settlement applies to consumers who purchased SDC orthodontic appliances between October 22, 2017, and August 18, 2022. Align Technology denies all allegations but agreed to the settlement to avoid ongoing litigation costs.

The court retains continuing jurisdiction over the enforcement of the settlement agreement, and the settlement fund is expected to be distributed within 75 days of its effective date, with eligible consumers receiving cash compensation proportionally.

Modern Dental Group Limited recently released its Q3 2025 update, reporting revenue of HK$2.752 billion for the first three quarters, a year-on-year increase of 9.2%; and sales volume of approximately 2.115 million units, a year-on-year increase of 29.5%.

The report indicates that the acquisition of Hexa Ceram, a dental prosthesis manufacturing plant in Thailand, contributed approximately 456,000 units in sales and HK$138 million in revenue to the company.

The European market was the largest source of revenue, with HK$1.366 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10.7%; revenue from the North American market was HK$534 million, a year-on-year decrease of 6.5%. Revenue from the Greater China market was HK$445 million, facing pressure from the volume-based procurement policy and long-term price competition in the mainland Chinese market.

In terms of digital solutions, Modern Dental's production of digital solutions in its manufacturing plants in mainland China, Thailand, and Vietnam increased by 24.4% to approximately 698,000 units in the first three quarters. The average selling price of dental prostheses in the first three quarters was HK$1,227 per unit, a year-on-year decrease of 14.9%.

Recently, Arrail Group launched its first internal training program for key dentists, the "Dentist Leadership Program," open to the industry for the first time. This program targets practicing dentists, aspiring dentists, and clinical managers, offering one year of intensive in-person learning plus one year of mentorship to help doctors address challenges in clinic operations, including strategic positioning, financial management, and team building.

The entire curriculum is divided into four main modules:

1. Business Foundation
2. Organization, Talent and Leadership
3. Operations, Quality and Compliance
4. Financing, business plan, investment roadshow

The plan provides a number of supporting resources, including:

The National Healthcare Security Administration recently issued the "Guidelines for the Establishment of Pricing Items for Maxillofacial Surgery Medical Services (Trial Implementation)," which integrates the existing pricing items into 71 main items, 30 additional items, and 5 extended items.

This guideline clarifies the project name, service output, and price composition, systematically reshaping existing pricing items. For surgical procedures targeting children, a unified surcharge policy for children will be implemented, with the surcharge percentage or amount determined by local medical security departments.

Next, the National Healthcare Security Administration will guide provinces to develop unified price benchmarks in order to determine the actual price levels to be implemented.

The Daoli Ecological Environment Bureau of Harbin City recently discovered through big data comparison using the "Internet + Supervision" platform that the radiation safety permit of a dental clinic in its jurisdiction was inconsistent with the legal person information on its business license.

Law enforcement officers initiated a joint online and offline investigation, confirming that the clinic had failed to apply for license changes in a timely manner, violating relevant regulations. The clinic has since completed rectification, and the license information has been restored to consistency.

For Class II medical devices, the average initial registration period will be reduced to 6 months, and priority registration of innovative products with clinical value will be encouraged. New and superior drugs and medical devices that meet the regulations will be promptly included in the medical insurance coverage, and efforts will be made to promote commercial insurance coverage for more innovative products.

Shanghai will focus on key areas such as artificial intelligence medical devices, promote the integration of technology with the entire pharmaceutical industry chain, and accelerate product application.

The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology and five other departments recently jointly issued the "Several Measures of Beijing Municipality to Promote the High-Quality Development of the Medical Device Industry," which will be valid until December 31, 2028.

This policy aims to support the development of the medical device industry through measures such as clinical research and development, registration and market launch, application of research results, and promotion of innovative medical devices. Eligible innovative medical devices can receive a maximum funding reward of 10 million yuan.

The policy also supports the digital transformation of medical device companies and their sales in international markets, and provides cost support for registration applications of newly approved medical device products, up to a maximum of RMB 1 million.

The Jiangxi Provincial Drug Administration recently issued a public notice soliciting opinions on the "Jiangxi Province Measures for the Classification and Grading Management of Drugs, Medical Devices and Pharmaceuticals (Trial) (Draft for Comments)" with a deadline of December 23, 2025.

The measures will classify and manage pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmaceutical distributors, medical device manufacturers, and cosmetic manufacturers according to their risk and quality management system levels.

Medical device manufacturers are classified into four levels, with inspection frequencies varying based on risk level and management system. For example, Level A companies are inspected at least once a year, while Level D companies are inspected at least four times a year.

During the trial period, if there are new national regulations, the new regulations will be followed, and the original relevant management measures will be repealed.

The National Medical Products Administration's Center for Medical Device Evaluation issued a notice soliciting public opinions on seven medical device registration review guidelines, including the "Guiding Principles for Registration Review of Light-Cureable Calcium Hydroxide Pulp Capping Agents (Draft for Comments)" and the "Guiding Principles for Registration Review of Dental Fiber Posts (Revised in 2025) (Draft for Comments)".

Light-cured calcium hydroxide pulp capping agent is a Class I Type 2 material, suitable for pulp capping, and its management category is Class III; dental fiber posts are suitable for restoration in clinical treatment, and their management category is also Class III.

The two guidelines set forth detailed requirements for the product's technical requirements, performance indicators, and biological characteristics.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and two other departments recently jointly released the "Public Notice on the Promotion and Application of High-end Medical Equipment in 2025", which selected a total of 57 projects.

Among them, two projects in the field of dentistry were selected for oral implant surgery navigation equipment. Align Technology recently announced the official launch of its Invisalign mandibular advancement system (with occlusal blocks) in the Philippines, specifically designed for the simultaneous correction of Class II skeletal and dental malocclusions.

This system is designed for growing patients aged 10 to 16 years. It uses laser-welded solid occlusal blocks to provide rigidity and durability, allowing for earlier initiation of the mandibular advancement phase. The patented SmartTrack™ material enhances comfort and compliance, and attachments can be placed under the occlusal blocks to facilitate tooth movement.

The system is now officially available to Invisalign-certified physicians in several Asia-Pacific countries, forming part of Align's treatment portfolio for patients in the growth phase.

The Ninth People's Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has launched the HC-Net+ model based on deep learning. In multi-center clinical validation, it achieved a diagnostic accuracy of 94.2% for periodontitis, which is better than the 85.6% accuracy of periodontologists.

The model was pre-trained using 10,400 unlabeled panoramic images, achieving a sensitivity of 95.6% and a specificity of 82.6%, with a single image evaluation time of only 0.02 seconds. Research shows that AI assistance can improve the diagnostic capabilities of dentists at all levels.

The research team believes that this system has the potential to serve as a technical option for early periodontitis screening in community centers and remote areas, and that it will further optimize detection capabilities by integrating multimodal imaging data in the future.

A recent study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association shows that 35.8% of American children aged 0 to 5 have not received any oral health care services in the past 12 months.

Based on data from 34,622 children, multivariate analysis showed that insurance coverage was the primary factor influencing service utilization. Children with private or public insurance were significantly more likely to receive services than uninsured children.

Family income and financial stability are equally important; children with incomes 400% above the federal poverty line are 45% more likely to receive services than children with incomes between 0% and 199%.

The study found that children are twice as likely to receive oral health care for every year they grow older. This research provides empirical support for the American Dental Association's call to include oral health in national healthcare cost reform.

A research team from King's College London recently published a study in the journal Translational Medicine, finding that successful root canal treatment can improve oral health and is associated with significant improvements in glucose and lipid metabolism as well as a reduction in systemic inflammation, suggesting that it may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The study followed 65 patients with periapical periodontitis and found significant changes in 24 serum metabolites within 2 years after surgery.

The study indicates that serum tryptophan, triglyceride, and glucose levels could serve as potential biomarkers for the prognosis of periapical periodontitis, but the sample size is small, and larger-scale studies are needed to validate these findings in the future.
